Rowing for Middle Schoolers
Join us for our Middle School Camp!
GGRC is holding a 2-week camp for Middle Schoolers. The program is designed to introduce them to both aspects of rowing - Sweep and Sculling. Coaches will teach them the basics of rowing.
What is Sweep Rowing - Generally speaking, Sweep Rowing is rowing with one oar in a team boat.
What is Sculling - Generally speaking, Sculling is rowing with 2 oars.
How will this program be set up?
We’ve set a maximum of 16 rowers.
Rowers will be split into 2 groups and while one group learns Sweep Rowing, the other group will learn Sculling.
The program will run July 27th - August 7th, Monday - Friday from 8:00am-9:30am
Some questions you may have…
Do they need to attend each practice? Ideally, yes! Rowing is a sport that is different from what youth are used to so the more they attend, the more they will learn!
Why is the camp scheduled for the morning rather than the afternoon? Weather is typically kinder in the mornings. This means those attending will learn in good weather conditions.
Will they need to know how to swim? YES! They will need to complete a swim test. As of January 31st, we are reviewing our typical swim test to determine if we should adjust it for middle school rowers. Should a rower come to the Camp and not have a completed swim test, they will be required to wear a life jacket until a completed test is provided.
Will there be an opportunity to row after the Camp? Possibly. We are discussing adding Middle School Rowing to our Fall Season of Youth Rowing. A decision on this will be made by March of 2026.
