Welcome to the Gentle Giant Rowing Club located on the Mystic River in Somerville, Massachusetts. Our Club is a not-for-profit, registered 501(c)3, organization dedicated to introducing and nurturing the sport of rowing, regardless of age, culture, financial ability or physical capability; and to improving and preserving the environment in and surrounding the rivers we row.
GGRC 25th Anniversary Celebrations!
In 2027, the Gentle Giant Rowing Club (GGRC) will celebrate 25 years on the water. This year we are combining our Boatbuilders and Annual Appeal fundraisers and asking you to help us raise $58,500 to purchase a new eight and a set of oars for the young rowers we serve. Since our founding in 2002 under the stewardship of Allan Gehant and Gracio Garcia, our mission has been to expand access to rowing beyond the Charles River and into the Mystic River Watershed. We teach sweeping and sculling to new rowers of all ages and draw experienced rowers to our shores, but our youth programs are the core of everything we do.
We provide financial support to middle and high school rowers from Somerville, Medford, Malden, and Everett. During the 2026 season alone, we awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships and waived race fees to over 30 youth rowers – including three Head of the Charles entries! We also make our equipment available to the Somerville High School rowing team and to Roca Chelsea’s Rowing Strong/Rowing Together program for teen mothers. Through these opportunities, young people experience the physical, mental, and social benefits of rowing and carry the lessons of teamwork into college, work, and family life. We are grateful to our naming sponsor, the Gentle Giant Moving Company, which has supported us from the beginning. However, sustaining these youth programs requires additional support from friends like you.

Your tax-deductible gift will contribute to the purchase of a new small eight-person shell and a matchingset of oars, delivered in time for the opening of our 25th anniversary season. This equipment will enhance our fleet and help us continue launching crews, expanding access to rowing, and building a stronger, more connected community.
