Adult Program

All Adult Rowing Programs are in Somerville

Whether you are an experienced rower or looking to try out the sport for the first time, the Gentle Giant Adult Rowing program is dedicated to providing the environment to achieve your goals. Our competitive rowers strive for top physical and technical ability and speed and have opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency at races locally and around the region. Recreational rowing, beginning with Learn to Row, advances training and skill development for all levels. Social activities outside of rowing will be organized to provide further enrichment of the camaraderie and team spirit forged on the water.

Our coaches have years of rowing, teaching, and coaching experience to accelerate the learning of all our participants. Putting safety first, all staff are Red Cross CPR and First Aid certified and power squadron certified in the use of motor boats from which they coach. Our coaches are also enrolled in US Rowing's coaching certification program to insure their professional development and knowledge of the latest advances and news in the rowing world.

Learn to Row/Novice
Rowing provides a full body, intense cardiovascular workout and is the ultimate team sport. If this sounds like the challenge you’ve been looking for, Gentle Giant’s Learn to Row program is a great way to get started. Our coaches offer a combination of enthusiasm and patience to get you onto the water and working towards your full potential. It can also be a great refresher if you’ve rowed previously but not been in a boat for quite some time.

You’ll start out on land with the ergometer (rowing machine) to learn the basics of the stroke. Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals you’ll take your seat in a boat and begin the real business of rowing. You’ll learn important safety information, rowing technique, physical training, and the physics of rowing and mechanics of the boats. In addition, you’ll make connections with new people from all walks of life with who share an interest in being fit and having fun doing it. Classes are Tuesday and Thursdays, either from 5:30 - 7:00 am, or from 6 - 7:30 pm in June, July and August.

Adult Experienced/Competitive
The experienced/competitive program includes practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 90 minute sessions either at 5:30 am or at 6:00 pm. The athletes have a wide range of experience and ability but share a common goal – moving a boat through the water with grace and speed. Under the direction of experienced coaches, the focus of workouts is to improve rowing technique, fitness, and most importantly, teamwork.

While not all members of the team choose to compete, many Gentle Giant rowers do. In 2010, teams from Gentle Giant competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta, the Head of the Textile, the New Hampshire Championships, the Cromwell Cup and the Providence Sweeps & Sculls.
