| Race Day! From the beginning of the 1500 meter
race, Somerville was out to the front of the pack. A
good start off the line put them ahead, and a strong middle 1000 meters kept them there. When it came down to the last 250 meters every
team bumped it up a notch or two and put it all out on the line. Still as the final meters washed away into wake,
Somerville understroked and defeated Worcester Public Schools by 3 seats and Brookline by
a full length in the boys novice eight Massachusetts Public High School Championships! Thats right Somerville High School rows!
Through a partnership with the
Gentle Giant Rowing Club, sponsored by the Gentle Giant Moving Co., Somerville High School
had a boys and girls combined program with over 30 student athletes training out of the
Blessing of the Bay Boathouse in the Ten Hills neighborhood of Somerville. For a two month long story with no previous
history of a team to the top of the state, everyone is a little excited to say the leas
not least of all the boys themselves:
Coxswain: Nathaniel Dias
Stroke: Dennis Chaves
Seven: Will DePaulo
Six: Max Jackson
Five: John Sutherland
Four: Dan Lemus
Three: Bobby Gibson
Two: Ergys Huta
Bow: Armand Andy
Veliaj
Boys Coach: Sebastian Lavotha
Gracio Garcia and Allan Gehant,
the Co-Directors of the Gentle Giant Rowing Club, could not be happier with the rapid
success. And everyone is certainly looking
forward to the fast future of Somerville High School rowing and that of all the Gentle
Giant Rowing programs serving the young and young at heart of the greater Somerville area
and the Mystic River Community. For more
